Baku (TDI): President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has proposed the creation of a new UN-Habitat “Green City” International Award aimed at encouraging environmentally sustainable urban development worldwide.

He made the proposal during his address at the Leaders’ Summit held as part of the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF-13) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Mirziyoyev said that in the context of accelerating global climate change, there is a growing need for unified principles and standards to guide the development of “green” cities. He suggested that the proposed award would serve as an incentive for cities to adopt environmentally friendly planning models and integrate nature-based solutions into urban development.

He emphasized that rising urbanisation trends are increasing the importance of local governance structures in managing sustainable city growth and climate resilience.

In addition to the award proposal, the Uzbek president also put forward an offer for Uzbekistan to host the 15th session of the World Urban Forum in 2030 in New Tashkent. He suggested that the central theme of that future forum could focus on strengthening the role of local communities in sustainable urban development.

The proposals were presented within the broader discussions at WUF-13, which brings together global leaders, policymakers, urban planners, and international organizations to address challenges related to housing, infrastructure, climate change, and rapid urbanisation.

The forum is jointly organized by UN-Habitat and Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, and is considered one of the UN’s leading platforms for shaping global urban policy.

This year’s discussions have focused heavily on sustainable housing, climate-resilient infrastructure, smart city development, and closing the gap between global urban policy frameworks and their practical implementation at the local level.
