Chinese Spring Festival Added to UNESCO Heritage List

Asuncion (TDI): The Chinese Spring Festival, celebrating the traditional Lunar New Year, has been inscribed on UNESCO  Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The announcement came during the 19th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asuncion, Paraguay, on Wednesday.

The festival, known for its rich traditions and vibrant celebrations, marks the start of the Lunar New Year in China and features family reunions, prayers for prosperity, and a variety of public festivities.

Recognized for its cultural significance, the event reflects harmony between humans and nature and contributes to social cohesion, sustainable development, and environmental awareness.

China’s Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism, Rao Quan, expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing the Spring Festival as a symbol of hope and a testament to China’s deep-rooted cultural heritage.

Spring Festival’s Role in Fostering Family Bonds

He highlighted its role in fostering family bonds, promoting social harmony, and driving economic and environmental sustainability.

With this inclusion, China now has 44 cultural elements listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
