China Goes Hard on Foreign AI Chips as White House Guards Nvidia’s Blackwell

The Trump administration does not plan to allow NVIDIA to sell its most advanced AI chip, known as Blackwell, to China, the White House said on Tuesday.

In recent months, Chinese regulatory authorities have ordered the tech companies to remove all installed foreign chips, and to cancel all the plans to purchase them in future.

This move represents China’s most aggressive step towards the elimination of foreign technology from its critical infrastructure, and in its quest for AI chip self-sufficiency.

The decision followed accusations by the Chinese government that Nvidia had violated antimonopoly laws, particularly concerning the H20 chip; a model previously designed specifically for the Chinese market.

According to Reuters, this move by Beijing would dash Nvidia’s hopes of regaining Chinese market share, while giving its local companies, like Huawei, yet another opportunity to secure more chip sales and to challenge US global dominance in the AI space by developing its own chips.

China’s access to advanced AI chips, including those made by Nvidia has been a key point of friction with the US, as the two wrestle for dominance in high-end computing power and AI.

Tech giant Nvidia, the world’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker, now finds itself at the center of escalating trade tensions between the United States and China.

Despite its global success, the company has become a focal point in the ongoing technological rivalry between the two powers. Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, expressed his “disappointment” over reports that China has banned its tech companies from purchasing Nvidia’s AI chips.

Jensen Huang told BBC News the US needs “to make sure that people can access this technology from all over the world, including China,” adding that “President Trump is very clear because he wants America to win, and President Xi wants China to win, and it’s possible for both of them to.”
