Karabakh, 8 November 2022 (TDI): Azerbaijan celebrates Victory Day on 8th November, celebrating the victory of the Karabakh war. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev declared the holiday on 2nd December 2020.
This day is celebrated as a non-working holiday on the day of the recapture of Shusha.
Background of the day
The Azerbaijani people led by President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev launched a patriotic war on September 27, 2020. The war was launched to liberate the occupied regions, in response to Armenia’s military attack.
Following this, the forces of Azerbaijan reclaimed the strategically important city of Shusha from the Armenian occupation in the Karabakh region. The peak of the city’s rescue was the weeks-long counterattack operations of the Azerbaijani army, coded as “Iron Fist”.
The city’s liberation was a major element in Armenia’s army surrendering and agreeing to a ceasefire on November 9, 2020. Therefore, Armenia was obliged to sign the act of capitulation, on November 10, 2020, after realizing its defeat.
On November 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint statement.
According to the Statement, on November 10, 2020, at 00:00 Moscow time, a total cease of fire and all military operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone were declared.
Finally, President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree designating November 8 as “Victory Day” in Azerbaijan on December 3, 2020.
