SCO Secretary-General Updates Member States on Organisation’s Recent Activities

Beijing (TDI): Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Nurlan Yermekbayev, briefed the permanent representatives of member states on the organisation’s latest activities and upcoming priorities during a meeting held at the SCO Secretariat in Beijing on Tuesday.

During the briefing, Yermekbayev outlined the outcomes of his recent official visits and working trips, which included meetings with heads of state, foreign ministers, business leaders, and members of the expert community across the SCO region.

He also updated representatives on a series of high-level SCO meetings held in recent months, including sessions of the Council of Defense Ministers, the meeting of Secretaries of Security Councils, the Council of Ministers of Internal Affairs and Public Security, and a gathering of tourism officials from member states.

The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of his visits to several SCO member countries and dialogue partners, including India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka. He said discussions during these engagements focused on deepening cooperation, expanding practical collaboration, and advancing shared initiatives within the SCO framework.

Reviewing the organisation’s international outreach, Yermekbayev shared insights from his participation in several major global forums. These included the CIS International Economic Forum in Moscow, an international conference on combating transnational drug threats in Samarkand, an environmental summit in Astana, a water sustainability conference in Dushanbe, and the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

He also briefed member states on his visits to China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Hainan Province, where discussions explored opportunities for regional cooperation and development.

According to the Secretary-General, cooperation among SCO members has continued to expand across a wide range of sectors, including politics, security, trade, digital development, culture, education, healthcare, and humanitarian exchanges. He noted that the organisation’s role is becoming increasingly significant amid ongoing shifts in the global political and economic landscape.

The meeting also included discussions on preparations for upcoming SCO events, notably the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting and the Council of Heads of State summit.

Permanent representatives expressed support for the work of the SCO Secretariat and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening unity, cooperation, and the organisation’s growing role in regional and international affairs.
