China Hosts SCO 25th Anniversary Event, Urges Stronger Cooperation

Beijing (TDI): A formal reception was held in Beijing on Monday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, bringing together senior diplomats, officials, and representatives from member and partner countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who attended as guest of honour, highlighted the organisation’s progress over the past quarter-century. He said SCO member states have worked together on principles of equality and justice, focusing on countering terrorism, separatism, and extremism while resisting external interference.

He also pointed to efforts to promote international legal norms and encourage peaceful resolution of disputes, which he said have contributed to a more balanced global order.

Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s commitment to a path of high-quality development and described the SCO as a key platform in its regional diplomacy. He added that Beijing is prepared to expand cooperation and share development opportunities with fellow member states for mutual benefit.

SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev also addressed the gathering, calling the anniversary a significant milestone for an organisation that has evolved from the “Shanghai Five” into the world’s largest transregional grouping. He emphasized the continued importance of the “Shanghai Spirit,” rooted in mutual trust, respect, and consensus-building among member countries.

Speaking about achievements and prospects, Nurlan Yermekbayev stressed that the joint efforts of member states have contributed to economic growth, social progress, and enhanced security.

Referring to the organisation’s future direction, he highlighted the SCO Development Strategy adopted in 2025, which outlines long-term goals to deepen practical cooperation among member states.

The reception also included discussions between Chinese officials and SCO leadership on upcoming high-level meetings scheduled under the chairmanship of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The event was attended by diplomats from member states, observer countries, and dialogue partners, as well as Chinese officials, representatives of international organisations, business leaders, academics, and media personnel.

Side events featured a photo exhibition in collaboration with Xinhua showcasing the organisation’s evolution and cooperation achievements, along with presentations from the Yangling SCO Demonstration Base on agricultural technology exchange and training. Guests also experienced cultural performances and demonstrations of Chinese robotics technology.
