Maldives Hopes for a Seat on UN Human Rights Council in 2028–2030 Term

Malé (TDI): The Maldives formally announced its candidature for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2028-2030 term during the 61st session of the council in Geneva.

The announcement, made by Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, signals a renewed push by the small island nation to play a more active role in shaping global human rights discourse and multilateral engagement.

In his national statement to council members, Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives’ “steadfast adherence to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” emphasizing that all people are “born free and equal in dignity and rights,” and calling for stronger cooperation and mutual respect among nations to uphold these shared values.

Khaleel also highlighted domestic efforts to strengthen democratic governance and rule of law, citing progress in institutional accountability, anti-corruption measures, and protections for vulnerable groups.

The minister underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing complex global challenges and stressed the need for an inclusive Human Rights Council that values fairness, objectivity, and constructive dialogue among its members.

The minister stressed the need for strengthened multilateral cooperation to address emerging global challenges while maintaining credibility and impartiality in the human rights framework.

He also reiterated calls for meaningful participation by Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in Council processes, a position frequently advanced by smaller states seeking stronger representation.

The Maldives’ bid for the 2028-2030 term comes as the country concludes its current engagement with the council, having served on the body previously, including a vice-presidential post and active participation in key sessions.

As the Maldives’ campaign gains momentum ahead of elections for council seats in 2027, Foreign Minister Khaleel’s address on Tuesday has set the tone for the country’s continued engagement with the United Nations and advocacy for universal human rights standards.
