Xi Praises China-Finland Relations

-

Beijing (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-level talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment in strengthening China-Finland relations amidst a shifting global landscape.

The two leaders presided over the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation agreements encompassing education, water management, environmental protection, the circular economy, and trade in agricultural and food products, according to Chinese media.

Analysts view the meeting as an important step in enhancing mutual cooperation, addressing misinterpretations, and fostering consensus between the two nations.

The dialogue is expected to contribute stability amidst challenges faced by Finland and Europe and provide a framework for reducing tensions within China-EU relations, increasingly impacted by geopolitical tensions.

President Xi commended Finland’s early recognition of the People’s Republic of China, recalling Finland’s distinction as the first Western nation to establish diplomatic relations and sign an intergovernmental trade agreement with China.

Xi reiterated China’s commitment to deepening strategic cooperation with Finland, expanding cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and advancing bilateral ties for mutual benefit.

He further announced China’s decision to include Finland in its list of visa-free countries, an invitation for Finnish nationals to engage in business, tourism, and education in China.

Stubb’s visit marks the first official trip to China by a Finnish head of state since 2019 and occurs amid a backdrop of European leaders’ increasing visits to Beijing in a bid to navigate global uncertainties and economic turbulence.

Finland’s Neutral Stance on EV Tariffs

Though ongoing negotiations on the EV tariffs continue, Finland has underscored its commitment to sustainable development and cooperation with China on climate, low-carbon initiatives, and Arctic governance.

Finland’s neutral stance may prove instrumental in diffusing the geopolitical undertones that increasingly cloud EU-China relations, opening pathways for collaboration on green energy transition and climate resilience.

As both nations broaden the scope of their partnership, their cooperative approach offers an opportunity for others within the EU to contemplate avenues of positive engagement with China, unimpeded by geopolitical constraints.
