Islamabad (TDI): The United States Embassy hosted a ceremony celebrating the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, making it the first-ever World Cup launch event held in Pakistan.
The gathering brought together senior figures from diplomacy, government, sports, and civil society in a celebration of football’s unifying power.
The event was attended by Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Mohsin Gilani, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, and the CEO of Lahore Qalandars, among other prominent guests.

Ambassadors representing several countries competing in the upcoming tournament were also in attendance. The US Chargé d’Affaires to Pakistan, Natalia A. Baker highlighted, the unique ability of sport to bridge communities and nations.
“In a few short weeks, the world will seem a little smaller as we all share in the highs and lows that the World Cup brings,” she said.

Baker extended special thanks to the PFF, as well as event sponsors McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, and Sialkot-based Forward Sports, praising their contributions to both the event and to Pakistan at large.
She noted that American businesses operating in Pakistan invest meaningfully in local communities through job creation, education, and the strengthening of bilateral commercial ties.
The Chargé d’Affaires also spoke warmly of a recent visit to Forward Sports’ factory in Sialkot, expressing admiration for the craftsmanship behind the World Cup footballs being manufactured there.
“I saw firsthand the craftsmanship and precision that go into producing world-class footballs,” she remarked, underscoring Pakistan’s tangible contribution to the global tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 national teams. Millions of fans are expected to travel to North America for matches across 16 host cities.
Baker also framed the tournament within a broader vision of American sporting ambition, describing 2026 as the beginning of an “American Decade of Sport.”

The United States is hosting at least ten major international sporting events between now and 2034, including the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. The World Cup also coincides with America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations on July 4th.
“Football asks us to dream bigger and to work together,” Baker said, adding that the United States remains committed to sports diplomacy as a tool for deepening people-to-people ties with partners like Pakistan.
