Board of Peace Seeks UNSC Pressure to Disarm Hamas

Gaza (TDI): The Board of Peace, the international body overseeing the US-backed Gaza ceasefire, is preparing to urge the UN Security Council to pressure Hamas into giving up its weapons, AP reported quoting a report.

The report, expected to be discussed during a Security Council meeting on the Middle East, says the biggest hurdle to fully implementing the ceasefire remains Hamas’ refusal to disarm and hand over control in Gaza. The group, however, strongly rejected the accusations, calling the report misleading and biased.

The ceasefire framework, backed by US President Donald Trump, includes a plan for Hamas to surrender its weapons network, while Israeli troops would gradually withdraw from Gaza. The proposal also outlines the formation of a technocratic Palestinian administration, deployment of an international security force, and large-scale reconstruction efforts in the war-hit territory.

Former UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov, who heads the Board of Peace, recently admitted that progress in the ceasefire process has largely stalled. According to the report, reconstruction and political transition cannot move forward unless armed groups in Gaza agree to disarm.

Hamas, meanwhile, argues that Israel has failed to fulfill several commitments under the agreement’s first phase, including easing restrictions on border crossings and allowing reconstruction materials into Gaza. The group accused the report of ignoring Israeli violations and attempting to derail the truce by focusing heavily on disarmament.

The report also notes repeated ceasefire violations on the ground, including continued Israeli airstrikes and worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where millions remain displaced and dependent on aid.
