Pakistan Calls for Global Counter-Terrorism Reforms

NEW YORK, (TDI): Pakistan has called for comprehensive global reforms in counter-terrorism efforts, emphasizing the need to address violent acts by white supremacists, far-right extremists, and xenophobic, Islamophobic, and anti-Muslim groups.

Speaking at the sixth committee of the UN General Assembly in New York, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, expressed regret over the insufficient progress in tackling the evolving and diverse threats posed by terrorism.

Ambassador Jadoon stressed that the international community has a responsibility to ensure that counter-terrorism measures are not misused to violate human rights and international humanitarian law, citing examples of such abuses by Israel in occupied Palestine and India in Jammu and Kashmir.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) position that a consensus-based Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) must clearly differentiate between acts of terrorism and the legitimate struggles of peoples under foreign and colonial occupation seeking self-determination and national liberation.

“Unless we take decisive action against this terror regime and uphold the UN Charter and international law, we risk descending into a Hobbessian world of violence and chaos where life becomes ‘ugly, brutish, and short,’” he warned.

The international community, Ambassador Jadoon said, has a responsibility to ensure that counter-terrorism efforts were not misused to violate human rights and international humanitarian law, as is being done by Israel in occupied Palestine and by India in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan, he added, fully supports the OIC’s position that a consensus-based Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) must clearly distinguish between acts of terrorism and the legitimate struggle of peoples under foreign and colonial occupation to self-determination and national liberation.

“Unless we act firmly against this terror regime, and uphold the UN Charter and international law, we will descend into a Hobbessian world of violence and chaos where life is ‘ugly, brutish and short’.”

Ambassador Jadoon highlighted Pakistan’s significant role in the fight against terrorism, noting its key contributions to dismantling Al-Qaeda and the heavy toll the country has endured, with 80,000 casualties in the war on terror.

He also raised concerns about state-sponsored terrorism emanating from neighboring countries, specifically citing threats from groups like the TTP, Daesh, and the Majeed Brigade.

Furthermore, he urged the international community to ensure that counter-terrorism measures are not misused to infringe upon human rights and international humanitarian law, referencing situations in occupied Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan Urges India to Honor UN Resolutions on Kashmir

At the United Nations, Pakistan has urged India to comply with Security Council resolutions that affirm the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

In a statement made during the right of reply, First Secretary at the Pakistan Mission Jawad Ajmal criticized India for being blinded by its ideology of hate, which he claimed hampers its ability to recognize the severe situation in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Ajmal emphasized that Pakistan has repeatedly presented concrete evidence of sabotage activities to the UN Security Council.

He further asserted that the international community has a duty to hold India accountable for its state terrorism and violations of international law in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as well as for its alleged global assassination campaigns.
