Islamabad (TDI): Participants of the International Young Diplomats School (IYDS), a flagship program of the Institute of Peace and Diplomatic Studies (IPDS), attended the Azerbaijan Independence Day reception hosted by the Embassy at Movenpick hotel, on Wednesday.
The participants were delighted to gain a rare, firsthand glimpse into the world of high-level diplomacy. The glittering reception, held to mark the 107th Independence Day of Azerbaijan, brought together some of Pakistan’s prominent political figures alongside the diplomatic corps.
For the young diplomats-in-training, the event offered an invaluable experiential learning opportunity; one that no classroom session could replicate.
The gathering was graced by Chief Guest Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, alongside Federal Ministers Aleem Khan, Musaddaq Malik, Salik Hussain, Shaza Fatima, and Azam Nazir Tarar.
Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov, hosted the ceremony, delivering a keynote address that traced the historic bonds between Baku and Islamabad, and underscored Azerbaijan’s journey since the restoration of its independence in December 1991.

For the IYDS participants, observing such moments of bilateral diplomacy in action; the speeches, the symbolism, the ceremonial cake-cutting, the quiet exchanges between officials, provided a living case study in how foreign policy is practiced beyond formal negotiations.
Interactions with ambassadors, senior government officials, and members of the diplomatic community offered the young participants networking opportunities that are central to a career in international affairs.
Ambassador Farhadov’s remarks on Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction, its role as a host of the upcoming session of the World Urban Forum, and its commitment to sustainable urban development gave the attendees substantive policy content to reflect upon.
Chairman Senate Gilani’s address, touching on cultural kinship, growing air connectivity, and even the centuries-old Multani Karwansarai in Baku as a testament to deep historical ties, further enriched the evening’s discourse.
The IYDS, run under the auspices of IPDS, is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world diplomatic practice.
Attending events such as this national day reception is precisely in keeping with that mission; immersing young participants in the protocols, conversations, and relationships that define contemporary diplomacy.

As the evening drew to a close at the Movenpick, the IYDS participants departed with more than just memories of a grand reception.
They left with a deeper appreciation of how history, culture, and strategic interest converge on the diplomatic stage, and of the role that committed young diplomats can play in carrying that legacy forward.
IPDS typically organizes the Young Diplomats School once a year as a unique platform to engage with diplomatic missions, learn about global opportunities, and strengthen people-to-people ties. With each year, this initiative is gaining popularity among students and emerging leaders, all over Pakistan.
The curated visits seek to nurture the next generation of Pakistani diplomats and policy professionals while supporting the public diplomacy outreach of diplomatic missions based in Pakistan.
Established in December 2008, The Diplomatic Insight is Pakistan’s premier diplomacy and foreign affairs magazine, available in both digital and print formats.
