Havana Hosts 6th Round of Pakistan-Cuba Bilateral Consultations

Havana (TDI): The 6th round of Bilateral Political Consultations between Pakistan and Cuba was held in Havana.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Ambassador Mariam Aftab, Additional Secretary (Americas), Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Cuban delegation was headed by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo.

The consultations covered a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues. Both sides reviewed political relations and discussed sectoral health, education, sports, and tourism cooperation.

They exchanged views on enhancing existing mechanisms of collaboration and identifying practical areas for future engagement. Regional and international developments of mutual interest were also part of the agenda.

Ambassador Aftab briefed the Cuban side on the evolving security situation in South Asia. The two sides emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and mutual understanding in addressing regional dynamics.

They acknowledged the role of regular diplomatic consultations in strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating cooperation in multilateral forums.

Pakistan and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1955. Over the decades, cooperation between the two countries has developed in several fields.

Cuba extended medical assistance to Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake, which included the deployment of a Cuban medical brigade and the establishment of field hospitals.

Additionally, hundreds of Pakistani students have benefited from medical education opportunities offered by Cuba under government-sponsored scholarship programs.

In recent years, both countries have continued to engage through diplomatic channels. In 2024, Pakistan and Cuba held virtual meetings focusing on enhancing cooperation in healthcare and education. These discussions aimed to build upon existing programs and explore new avenues for collaboration.

It was mutually decided that the next round of Bilateral Political Consultations will be held in Islamabad, with dates to be finalized through diplomatic channels.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the need to further institutionalize cooperation in identified areas, with a focus on achieving practical outcomes through sustained diplomatic interaction.
