‘Great Nation’ Possible If Canada Becomes 51st State: Trump

Washington (TDI): US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday once again stirred controversy by suggesting Canada’s merge with the United States hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced resignation.

“Many in Canada embrace the idea of being the 51st State. The US can no longer bear the burden of massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada required to support Canada. Justin Trudeau knew this, and stepped down,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trudeau announced his resignation earlier Monday amid increasing dissatisfaction within his party and low public approval ratings, raising concerns about his ability to win the next vote against a surging Conservative opposition.

Trump said that a US-Canada merger would eliminate trade barriers and reduce taxes for Canadians.

“If Canada merged with the United States, tariffs would disappear, taxes would significantly decrease, and they would gain full security against the constant threat of Russian and Chinese ships surrounding them.”

Trump further described his vision of potential merger by stating, “what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Since his election victory in November, the US incoming president has referred to Canada as the “51st state.”

Trump also previously threatened to slap a 25% tariff on Canadian imports unless Canada takes measures to considerably reduce drugs and illegal immigrants crossing into the United States.
