Islamabad, 6 August 2022 (TDI): Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has conveyed a comprehensive letter to the President of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, President of the UN General Assembly, Secretary General of the UN, and the UN High Commissioner.

He called for Human Rights (HR) protection concerning the alarming situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The Minister wrote the letter on 5 August. Hence, the letter emphasizes the violation of International Law by the Indian government regarding Kashmir.

Moreover, India illegally infringed the United Nations Charter and UN Security Council resolutions on the future of Kashmir.

Furthermore, it mentions that all the actions taken by India on and after 5 August 2019 are illegal as per UNSC resolution 122.

Above all, the Foreign Minister accentuated that India uses a series of illegal weaponry and HR violations. Likewise, the major crimes include extra-judicial killings of innocent Kashmiris, use of pellet guns, abduction, and enforced disappearances.

Additionally, the incarceration of almost the entire Kashmiri leadership is one of the most disturbing acts. The destruction and burning of entire villages and urban neighborhoods are other heinous crimes.

Moreover, the Indian forces punish Kashmiris who seek freedom by peaceful means. India is demographically changing its territory. It is a gross violation of the 4th Geneva Convention.

Demands in the letter

Besides, the Minister appealed to the responsible international bodies to take steps to end India’s human rights violations. These include establishing a Commission of inquiry and updating the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights assessment.

Foreign Minister further stressed the UN High Commissioner to visit Kashmir and ask India to release all Kashmiri political prisoners and the abducted youth and finally demanded to assure freedom of expression, movement, and association throughout the occupied territory.

Finally, he urged the international institution to make concerted efforts to promote a peaceful settlement. Therefore, the valley’s future should be settled with the wishes of Kashmiri.
