Tbilisi, 24 June 2022 (TDI): President of the European Council, Charles Michel said that the EU states decided to recognize the European perspective of Georgia. President Charles Michel is ready to grant candidate status to Georgia.

Moreover, the President of the European Council, said: “Congratulations to the Georgian people. It is a historic moment in EU-Georgia relations. The future of Georgia depends on the EU”.

Furthermore, the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili tweeted that it is a historic day. She said that Georgia is “now ready to work with determination to receive the candidate status”.

Further, Foreign Minister, Ilia Darchiashvili said after being granted Georgia’s European perspective, Georgia entered a new critical phase on the (EU) integration path.

Since its independence, Georgia has expressed its European aspirations. On March 3, Georgia applied for the EU membership. Further, the European Commission said the European Council granted Georgia a “European perspective.”

On the other side, Foreign Minister, llia Darchiashvili said, through efforts will regain its place in the EU family and is grateful to the European Council for this decision and belief.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, said that they were “ready to implement all priorities to achieve the candidate status soon“.

Further, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, said Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia “all three countries have work to do before moving to the next stage of the process.”

Further, he said, “they know how it is crucial for their democracies, their economies, and their citizens”. President Ursula Von der Leyen tweeted congratulating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili.

In addition, he said, “these countries are part of our European family and today Leaders confirm this historic decision.” Apart from this, President Ursula Von der Leyen tweeted that this decision “strengthened the EU”.
