China Sends Medical Team to DRC as Ebola Outbreak Spreads

Beijing (TDI): China has sent a team of medical experts to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to support efforts to contain a worsening Ebola outbreak that has caused alarm and fear across Central Africa.

The dispatch follows Beijing’s announcement that it would provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the DRC, where health authorities are battling an outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

China said the expert team will work alongside Chinese medical personnel already stationed in the country and coordinate closely with local health and disease-control authorities.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, this reflects Beijing’s commitment to supporting African countries affected by the outbreak.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson said China is ready to continue providing assistance as needed and to strengthen cooperation with African partners in the public health sector.

The outbreak, first confirmed in northeastern DRC in mid-May, has rapidly escalated amid ongoing conflict, population displacement and limited healthcare infrastructure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the situation as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, warning that the virus is spreading in a highly challenging environment.

International health agencies have struggled to contain transmission as insecurity and logistical obstacles hamper contact tracing and treatment efforts.

WHO officials say testing capacity is being expanded across the country, while aid organizations are rushing medical supplies and protective equipment to affected regions.

The outbreak has also taken on a regional dimension. Neighboring Uganda has reported cases linked to cross-border transmission and has introduced emergency measures aimed at limiting the spread of the virus.

China’s latest intervention adds to a growing international effort that includes support from WHO, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several governments. The medical team is expected to contribute expertise in epidemic control, laboratory testing, and emergency response.
