Singapore (TDI): Vietnamese President To Lam has reaffirmed the importance of ASEAN’s central role in maintaining peace, stability, and economic development across the Asia-Pacific region, warning against growing geopolitical rivalries that could undermine regional cooperation.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore, Lam stressed that countries in the region share common interests in peace, connectivity, and sustainable development. He described the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as a vital platform for dialogue, cooperation, and balance amid increasing strategic competition among major powers.

The Vietnamese leader said ASEAN has both the determination and responsibility to ensure that geopolitical competition does not escalate into confrontation. He emphasized that regional connectivity should serve as a bridge for cooperation rather than become a source of division, and that one country’s pursuit of security should not come at the expense of another’s stability.

Lam noted that ASEAN centrality cannot be taken for granted and must be continuously strengthened through regional unity, strategic autonomy, and the ability of member states to shape a common agenda. According to him, maintaining cohesion among ASEAN members is essential for preserving the bloc’s influence in regional affairs.

He also welcomed constructive engagement from external partners, provided it is transparent, respects international law, supports ASEAN-led mechanisms, and contributes to reducing tensions rather than deepening rivalries.

The remarks come at a time when the Asia-Pacific region is witnessing intensified competition among major powers, making ASEAN’s role as a neutral convening platform increasingly significant. Regional leaders have repeatedly emphasized the need for dialogue and multilateral cooperation to address security, economic, and technological challenges.

Lam’s address highlighted Vietnam’s continued support for a rules-based regional order and reinforced ASEAN’s ambition to remain at the center of diplomatic and security discussions in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
