Phnom Penh (TDI): Lieutenant General Vu Hong Son, the commander of the Air Defense Command of the Vietnam People’s Army, said that Vietnam supports peaceful resolution of the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.
He conveyed Hanoi’s position during a meeting with General Vong Pisen, commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), on Tuesday at the RCAF General Headquarters.
Lieutenant General Vu Hong Son recalled the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam, saying that both nations stood together in past struggles.
He emphasized that Vietnam is critically monitoring the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border and supports efforts to ensure sustainable peace and stability in the region.
Historically, Vietnam played a crucial role in ending the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in 1979, and that shared past has kept both nations close to each other. Hanoi and Phnom Penh have also kept close military and political ties.
Pisen, on the other hand, stressed that “mutual assistance and preservation of solidarity among Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are fundamental to development and peace in the region.”
He also appreciated Vietnam for its continued support in human resource development and strengthening Cambodia’s Air Force capabilities.
The RCAF commander-in-chief expressed its gratitude to Vietnam for supporting the ceasefire and assigning officers to participate in the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), a mechanism deployed to monitor conditions along the disputed border.
Additionally, he urged Vietnam to continue backing the AOT mission to ensure that the ceasefire holds and contributes to maintaining lasting peace and security along the border.
Vietnam’s support for the ceasefire is a meaningful effort to achieve sustainable peace in the region. It reflects the broader push within ASEAN to resolve the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute peacefully.
