Abuja, Nigeria (TDI): The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, General Birame Diop, received the ambassadors of Qatar and Sudan at the bloc’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

General Diop held two separate audiences; the first was with Qatar’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Mohammed Ahmed Al-Hailand, and the second with Sudan’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mohammed Abdelaai.

According to the Commission, the meetings were an opportunity to discuss strengthening relations and enhancing cooperation between ECOWAS and Qatar. Areas of mutual interest; regional integration, peace and security, and development were discussed.

The Commission said the engagement underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to deepening partnerships with countries beyond West Africa in support of regional stability and sustainable development.

The visits fit a pattern of diplomatic activity at the Commission. On September 14, General Diop received Tunisia’s ambassador, with the Commission likewise reaffirming a commitment to stronger cooperation.

Together, the meetings suggest the ECOWAS leadership is using ambassadorial engagements to broaden the bloc’s network of international partners.

The outreach comes as ECOWAS, which was founded in 1975 and now counts 12 member states, works to advance its long-term integration agenda under its Vision 2050 framework and to address security and development challenges across the region.

Sudan’s presence at the Commission carries particular weight. The country has been affected by armed conflict since April 2023, and its diplomatic representation in Abuja is accredited to both Nigeria and ECOWAS.

Peace and security, one of the themes cited in the Commission’s statement on the Qatar meeting, remains a shared concern for African regional bodies.

Qatar, for its part, has in recent years positioned itself as an active diplomatic player and mediator in several international conflicts, which may make its relationship with a regional bloc focused on peace and security a natural area of interest.
