Kuwait City, 1 March 2022 (TDI): The UNSC welcomed Kuwait-Iraq‘s new path of cooperation in areas of interest. Today, through a statement from the United Nations Security Council, Kuwait and Iraq will work together for victims of the passed conflict between them.

UNSC Press Conference Main Details 

During a Press Conference, the members of the Security Council welcomed the initiative driven by Kuwait and Iraq leaders to join in an important project. This one is oriented to search for missing Kuwaiti and third-country nationals during the conflict.

Kuwait and Iraq are working to enforce their cooperation before 2020; however, that year became the inflection point of their relationship and their stronger support to each other.

In this regard, the UNSC members thanked Kuwait for the conclusion of the first stages of the project. The latter showed results of over 59 sets of remains identified as Kuwaitis and third state nationals. Those that were recovered from Samawah in Iraq and transferred to Kuwait in 2019 and 2020.

In addition to that, the UNSC highlighted the discovery of 6 sets of remains that didn’t match any victim from the database. These were transferred from Kuwait to Iraq. To this, the Security Coucil showed its deepest sympathy to the families of the missing victims. They also expressed their condolences for the lives lost during the conflict.

Tripartite Mechanism

On the other hand, at the Press Conference the UNSC commended the International Committe of the Red Crosss for its incredible job alongside the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

This in relation to the Tripartite Mechanism and its role in facilitating the implementation of the resolution 2107 (2013). This one that aims to resolve the immediate issue related to the missing Kuwait and thrid state nationals.

UNSC Key Remarks 

For this reason, the Security Council Members gladly congratulated the commitment of the Iraqui government to be part of such a important initiative.

They also remarked that the return of all remaining Kuwaiti property results in a show of respect and appreciation. Likewise, the Member States encouraged the government to continue in the search of the missing victims and their national archives.

Finally, the UNSC members expressed their great appreciation to the Iraqui government for fulfilling its remaining obligation to Kuwait. Not to mention, to perform in accordance to UNSC resolutions.
