PM Seeks to Deepen Pakistan, Bangladesh Cooperation

Islamabad, 9 August 2024 (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday that he sought to “deepen cooperation” between Pakistan and Bangladesh as he sent good wishes to Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus who took oath as interim government’s chief advisor.

Yunus’s appointment to lead the Bangladesh’s interim government came after violent protests by a student-led movement forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and flee the country earlier this week.

The demonstrations resulted in the tragic death of more than four hundred people, mostly consisting of young students.

Sharif, 72, took to X, to felicitate Yunus, 84, and wrote: Heartiest congratulations to Muhammad Yunus on his swearing-in as Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh.

Yunus, a staunch critic of Sheikh Hasina, is known as “banker to the poor” and earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for establishing a bank that pioneered the war on poverty through small loans to needy people.

Pakistan and Bangladesh established diplomatic ties in December 1975.
