Antalya (TDI): Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Israel is using security concerns as a justification for territorial expansion and is seeking to acquire more land rather than simply defend itself.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Fidan argued that Israel has created an international perception that its actions are purely defensive, but recent developments suggest otherwise.
He said Israeli policies indicate a pattern of expansion, pointing to developments in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and extending toward Lebanon and Syria. According to Fidan, this reflects a broader strategy of occupation that needs to come to an end.
Fidan stressed that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved if all countries respect each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security, rather than relying on force.
Relations between Turkiye and Israel have grown increasingly tense since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023. Turkiye has been among the most vocal critics of Israel and has participated in diplomatic efforts, alongside countries like Pakistan and Egypt, aimed at reducing regional tensions.

His remarks also follow a recent exchange of strong statements between Turkish and Israeli officials. Earlier in April, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prompting a sharp response from Ankara.
The Turkish foreign ministry rejected Netanyahu’s comments, saying they reflected discomfort with Turkiye’s consistent criticism of Israeli actions.

Fidan had also recently claimed that Israel is seeking to position Turkiye as a new adversary, describing this as part of an emerging strategic approach.
