China Pavilion Opens at COP29 in Baku

Baku (TDI): The China Pavilion was officially inaugurated at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which commenced on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Scheduled to run from November 11 to 22, the pavilion will feature ten themed days, hosting a range of side events and activities throughout the conference.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the pavilion’s opening, Zhao Yingmin, head of the Chinese delegation and vice minister of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, highlighted China’s evolving role as a prominent participant, contributor, and leader in international ecological efforts. He emphasized China’s readiness to collaborate with the global community to enhance political trust, practice multilateralism, and strengthen cooperation in pursuit of a prosperous, clean, and sustainable future.

Liu Zhenmin, China’s special envoy for climate change, reiterated that climate action remains a top priority for Beijing, underscoring the significance of low-carbon development in China’s national strategy.

“Building a beautiful China hinges on sustainable and low-carbon practices,” he said, adding that China’s progress in green development has received notable international recognition.

Expressing optimism about COP29, Liu urged the global community to uphold the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities” in climate action and called on developed nations to meet their commitments by financially supporting developing countries in building resilience against climate threats.

“China stands ready to work with the international community to reinforce multilateralism, uphold fairness and justice in climate governance, respect market rules, and ensure freedom in trade,” Liu noted, stressing the importance of fostering stability and certainty in global climate governance through meaningful outcomes at COP29.
