US announces new $2bn aid for Ukraine

Kyiv, 15 May 2024 (TDI): The US announced a new $2bn aid for Ukraine which Secretary Anthony Blinken told during his address in Kyiv on Wednesday, he stated that weapons would be expedited to the front lines to “protect soldiers and citizens.”

Speaking at a joint news conference in Kyiv alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the new aid, which follows the $61 billion in support approved by Congress last month, will focus on enhancing Ukraine’s industrial base. He emphasized that this new support comes at a “critical time” for the country.

The aid package included military assistance and industrial enhancement in Ukraine during this crucial phase of war where Russia has seized three more settlements.

“Everything must happen fast, weapons must come fast so that we can disrupt Russia’s offensive plans in Ukraine and prevent its aggressive plans against the rest of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Ukraine announced that it had withdrawn some troops from the Kharkiv region following a surprise offensive by Russian forces earlier this month, which involved heavy attacks on settlements near the border.

“In certain spots in Lukyantsi and Vovchansk areas, due to the fire impact and assault actions of the enemy, maneuvers were carried out to save the lives of our soldiers, units were removed to advantageous positions,” a military spokesman said on state television.

As per the Ukrainian security agencies, Russia has deployed an additional 30,000 troops in the Northeastern region due to which 8000 Ukrainians had to flee the area. In the city of Dnipro, which lies in the heart of Ukraine, two people were killed due to Russian strikes.
