OIC-COMSTECH Launches Midwifery Training to Improve Maternal Care in Tharparkar

Islamabad (TDI): OIC-COMSTECH, in collaboration with the University of Modern Sciences, has announced the launch of an Advanced Midwifery Clinical Skills Training Program for women in Tharparkar.

The initiative is tailored specifically for female candidates from the region, with a focus on applicants from Taluka Chachro and Dahili.

Eligible participants include certified midwives as well as those who have recently appeared in their final midwifery examinations. The training will be hosted at Indus Medical College Hospital and is scheduled to run from mid-April through the end of May 2026.

Designed as a fully funded program, it will cover tuition, accommodation, and meals—removing financial barriers and encouraging participation from remote communities. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2026.

The program aims to address critical gaps in maternal and child healthcare services in Tharparkar. Its core objectives include enhancing clinical skills in safe delivery practices, strengthening emergency obstetric and neonatal care, and promoting community-level awareness regarding maternal and child health.

This initiative follows a two-day medical camp recently conducted in Chachro, where healthcare professionals identified an urgent need for skilled maternal healthcare providers. The findings from that engagement directly informed the development of this targeted training program.

Commenting on the initiative, Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH, emphasized the organization’s commitment to improving healthcare in marginalized regions.

He noted that empowering local midwives with advanced clinical skills would lead to safer deliveries, reduced maternal and neonatal mortality, and stronger community health systems.

He also highlighted the importance of addressing maternal mental health, particularly postpartum depression, which often remains undiagnosed in remote communities.

According to him, the program will equip healthcare providers with the knowledge to identify and support mothers facing such challenges, ensuring more holistic care for both mother and child.

Dr. Choudhary further reaffirmed OIC-COMSTECH’s commitment to expanding similar initiatives through partnerships with national institutions, aiming to uplift healthcare standards across underserved areas of Pakistan and other member states.
