US and EU discuss transatlantic cooperation

Washington D.C., 9 May 2023 (TDI): Deputy Secretary of the United States (US) Wendy Sherman held a productive discussion with European External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino today, focused on strengthening transatlantic cooperation and a united approach towards the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Indo-Pacific region.

During the conversation, the US Deputy Secretary and European Secretary General exchanged views on a wide range of issues of mutual interest and concern, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

They reaffirmed their shared commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s illegal aggression and underscored the importance of transatlantic unity in this regard.

Most importantly, the two officials also discussed the pressing need for closer cooperation on matters related to the PRC and the Indo-Pacific region. They agreed that a united approach is essential to addressing common challenges and opportunities in this critical part of the world.

They also highlighted the importance of promoting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, as well as countering threats such as malign influence and economic coercion.
