Ukraine Agrees to 30-Day Ceasefire in Talks with U.S.

Jeddah (TDI): Ukraine has accepted a 30-day ceasefire proposal following a meeting between its delegation and U.S. officials in Jeddah.

The agreement comes as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end hostilities and establish a framework for lasting peace.

During the discussions, the United States agreed to lift restrictions on intelligence sharing with Ukraine and resume security assistance.

A joint statement from both sides reaffirmed their commitment to restoring stability and working toward a long-term resolution.

Ukraine confirmed its readiness to implement an immediate 30-day ceasefire, which may be extended if agreed upon by all parties involved.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington will convey to Moscow that mutual cooperation is essential for achieving peace.

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz emphasized the importance of halting all military operations, saying, “The president has made it clear that all fighting needs to stop.

The Ukrainians have accepted that proposal, they’re ready for peace. Now, we will take that to the Russians.”

Humanitarian and Economic Initiatives

The joint statement also highlighted plans for humanitarian relief during the ceasefire period, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of forcibly displaced Ukrainian children.

Additionally, both governments agreed on a comprehensive framework for developing Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. The initiative aims to strengthen Ukraine’s economy, offset the cost of U.S. assistance, and support its long-term security.

Ukraine reiterated that European partners must be involved in the peace process. The call for broader engagement aligns with recent proposals from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who had previously suggested a one-month ceasefire. However, Moscow rejected their plan.

Saudi Arabia’s Role in Peace Efforts

Saudi Arabia hosted the meeting as part of its diplomatic efforts to facilitate a resolution to the conflict. Secretary of State Rubio led the U.S. delegation in discussions with Ukrainian representatives.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was in Saudi Arabia for talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, did not attend the meeting but expressed his appreciation for Saudi and U.S. mediation. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to constructive dialogue and underscored the importance of addressing key humanitarian concerns, including the release of prisoners and the return of displaced children.

During his meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince, Zelenskyy discussed conditions for ending the war and securing a lasting peace. He noted that a significant portion of their discussions focused on security guarantees.

Diplomatic Developments Following U.S.-Ukraine Tensions

The talks marked the first formal engagement between Ukrainian and U.S. officials following tensions between President Zelenskyy and President Donald Trump during their Oval Office meeting.

Before the negotiations, Secretary of State Rubio met with the Saudi Crown Prince to acknowledge Saudi Arabia’s role in hosting the talks.

Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about the meeting, stating that there was an expectation of “substantial progress.” He noted that discussions aimed to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire.

President Trump also commented on the talks, saying he anticipated “good results” from the negotiations.
