Islamabad (TDI): Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has said Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to help end Iran War carry “immense benefits” and pose minimal risks, calling the situation a major opportunity for the country.

In a television interview, Asif stressed that Pakistan cannot afford to stay on the sidelines, noting that Islamabad, along with Türkiye and Egypt, is actively working to de-escalate tensions and prevent further destruction in the region. He described Pakistan’s role as “pivotal” in efforts to bring the conflict to an end.

Calling the moment “historic,” the defense minister said Pakistan must take advantage of emerging opportunities. He argued that the country’s global standing has improved, particularly among Muslim nations, following last year’s military standoff with India.

Asif also pointed to strengthening ties with the United States, suggesting that Pakistan currently enjoys an unprecedented diplomatic position with Washington. He described the country as being in a “unique phase,” marked by growing international trust and confidence.

On regional security, he acknowledged ongoing tensions with Afghanistan and described relations with India as “lukewarm,” while emphasizing the importance of a unified national leadership approach in enhancing Pakistan’s global image.

Responding to questions about a potential defense obligation toward Saudi Arabia in case of escalation with Iran, Asif said diplomacy is key to avoiding such a scenario altogether.

He declined to comment directly on reports that Pakistan could host talks between the US and Iran, saying it is better to let diplomatic processes unfold quietly.

On Afghanistan, the minister said Pakistan’s ongoing operations have increased pressure but are still underway, with a temporary slowdown during Eid. He reiterated that efforts would continue to achieve maximum results and expressed hope that China could play a constructive role in stabilising the situation there.

Overall, Asif maintained that Pakistan’s proactive diplomacy not only helps reduce regional tensions but also strengthens its international standing and influence.
