Philippines Marks 128 Years of Freedom in Islamabad

Islamabad (TDI): The Embassy of Philippines in Pakistan commemorated the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with a diplomatic reception at the Marriott Hotel.

The celebration was graced by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain as Chief Guest, while Presidential Spokesperson Murtaza Solangi attended as Guest of Honor, conveying a message on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari.

The gathering drew senior Pakistani government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the business community, media representatives, and members of the Filipino community in Pakistan.

Philippine Ambassador Emmanuel R. Fernandez used the occasion to reflect on the 1898 proclamation while stressing the importance of international interdependence in today’s interconnected world.

Noting a recent earthquake that struck the southern Philippines, he acknowledged the tragedy’s weight on the Filipino people while pointing to it as evidence of the nation’s resilience.

Ambassador Fernandez also highlighted the growing bilateral relationship, citing the contributions of more than 3,500 Filipinos living and working in Pakistan and ongoing efforts to expand trade, investment, and educational linkages between the two countries.

In President Zardari’s message, Pakistan extended congratulations to the Philippines as both countries prepare to mark 77 years of diplomatic relations later this year, calling the partnership one grounded in mutual respect and shared commitment to the welfare of their peoples.

The bilateral relationship has seen notable economic momentum. Federal Minister Hussain cited a sharp rise in bilateral trade, which grew from $143 million in Fiscal Year 2023 to $268.3 million in Fiscal Year 2025, and noted the successful convening of the Second Meeting of the Pakistan–Philippines Joint Economic Commission in February 2026 as a key milestone.

Minister Hussain also congratulated the Philippines on hosting the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu under its ASEAN Chairmanship, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s interest in strengthening engagement with ASEAN as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner.

Both sides expressed solidarity in the wake of the Mindanao earthquake. Pakistan conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Filipino people affected by the disaster and voiced support for ongoing recovery efforts.

The evening closed with cultural presentations and Philippine cuisine, reflecting the country’s heritage and its commitment to fostering stronger international partnerships.

The Philippines observes Independence Day every 12 June, marking the 1898 proclamation and honoring the values of freedom, sovereignty, and democracy.
