NANTERRE, France – Team USA Tuesday reclaimed its dominance in women’s gymnastics, securing the first all-around gold medal since the 2016 Rio Olympics.
1st August, 2024 (TDI): Simone Biles, the 27-year-old gymnast, competed in all four events—bars, beam, vault, and floor—despite a recent calf injury and won her eighth Olympic gold, solidifying her position as the most decorated gymnast in history.
Italy and Brazil took the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Biles and defending Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee will participate in the individual all-around competition on Thursday.
Meanwhile, seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky is poised to compete for another gold in today’s 1500-meter freestyle final.
Additionally, Team USA’s men’s soccer team made headlines by advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years, where they will face Morocco on Friday. The United States reached a significant milestone, becoming the first nation to win 3,000 Olympic medals, with the latest victories coming from the Paris Olympics.
Gold for Northern Ireland
In a historic first for Northern Ireland, Daniel Wiffen won the men’s 800-meter freestyle to secure an Olympic gold for his country in 36 years. Wiffen splashed his way into record books as he edged past American swimmer Bobby Finke, a two-time Olympian, who took home the silver medal.
With this remarkable victory, Wiffen has also set a new record with 7 minutes 38.19 seconds, overcoming Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk’s record of 7 minutes 41.28 seconds, which was set in Tokyo in 2021.
