Washington DC, 28 March 2022 (TDI): Lieutenant General Nigar Johar, HI (M), Director General Medical Services (Inter-Services) of Pakistan Army, and Surgeon General of Pakistan attended the APPNA Spring meeting as chief guest.

The meeting was held in Oklahoma, the USA, from 24 to 27 March. Lieutenant General Nigar Johar was the keynote speaker at the “Social Forum on Women empowerment.”

Distinguished members of the Pakistani-American diaspora attended the Forum. The presentation of Lieutenant General Nigar Johar was followed by a comprehensive question & answer (Q/A) session.

During the Q/A session, the Surgeon General was joined by Dr. Shirin Tahir-Kheli, a renowned US diplomat of Pakistani descent. General Nigar Johar was also invited by APPNA board members to attend the APPNA Council meeting.

During the meeting, the Surgeon General shed light on ways and means to further strengthen Pak-US cooperation in training Pakistan Army Medical Corps personnel.

The training will include placement in select specialties and short courses, along with the participation of leading US physicians in seminars and workshops organized by the Pakistan Army Medical Corps.

The Surgeon General also attended the closing ceremony of the APPNA Spring meeting as a Guest of Honor on 26 March. The Governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Leslie Viguerie, also attended the event.

Lieutenant General Nigar Johar also attended events arranged by Allama Iqbal and Nishtar Medical Alumni on the sidelines of the APPNA forum. Moreover, she also visited Washington DC on 28 March and met the Ambassador of Pakistan to the US, Masood Khan, at the Embassy.

In addition, she also called on Joint Staff Surgeon, Major General (Dr.) Paul Friedrichs at the Pentagon. The meetings focused on further bolstering Pak-US collaboration in the health sector.

Lieutenant General Nigar Johar is a national icon in Pakistan. She is the epitome of women’s empowerment. This visit provided her with a significant opportunity to discuss Pak-US collaboration in the health sector, particularly the medical training of Pakistan Army Medical Corps personnel.

Her participation at the APPNA spring meeting gave a message to the Pakistani-American community and the US audience about the initiatives undertaken by Pakistan to mainstream women’s empowerment in all parts of society.
