London (TDI): British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing fresh political pressure, with opposition leaders calling for his resignation after new details emerged about a controversial diplomatic appointment.
The controversy centres on Peter Mandelson, a former UK ambassador to the United States, who was reportedly allowed to assume his post despite failing a required security vetting process. The government confirmed that the vetting concerns had been flagged before his appointment.
Mandelson was later dismissed after Starmer stated that he had misrepresented the nature of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Officials have said that Starmer was not informed when the Foreign Office overruled the negative vetting recommendation. Following the fallout, the Foreign Office’s top civil servant, Olly Robbins, is expected to step down after losing the prime minister’s confidence, Reuters reported.
Opposition figures have sharply criticized the handling of the situation. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey argued that responsibility ultimately lies with Starmer, accusing him of misleading both parliament and the public, a claim the prime minister denies.

Starmer has apologised for the appointment but defended his own conduct, blaming Mandelson for what he described as repeated dishonesty regarding his ties to Epstein. He has also pledged to make public the details surrounding the appointment process.
Senior minister Darren Jones said the prime minister was “furious” upon learning that the failed vetting had not been communicated to him. He maintained that Starmer did not mislead parliament, though he acknowledged flaws in the appointment process. Starmer is expected to address lawmakers on the issue in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Mandelson is reportedly under police investigation over allegations that he leaked government documents to Jeffrey Epstein. He has not publicly responded to these claims.
