Poland Ready to Work with Pakistan in Defeating Threats: Envoy

-

Islamabad (TDI): Congratulating Pakistan on the election to the UN Security Council for 2025-2026, Poland’s Ambassador in Islamabad Maciej Pisarski on Thursday said that his country looks forward to working with Islamabad on preventing and solving conflicts globally.

In a press briefing here on Thursday, he  also said that Poland is ready to work with Pakistan for preventing crisis which undermine security of the two countries.

“We believe that activity of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in this international body will contribute to building lasting peace and security in the world,” he said.

Poland fully appreciate a longstanding participation of Pakistan in the UN peacekeeping missions.

On Pak-Poland ties, he said,  “Our countries have developed friendly and productive cooperation over the 62 years.”

This relationship stood the test of pressing international developments like the dramatic events in Kabul in August 2021 or the evacuation of the Pakistani students from Ukraine after the Russian invasion, he further said.

The ambassador said that the two countries have proved that they can help each other in the face of an international crisis.

Poland, Pakistan Trade Ties

On Pak-Poland economic ties, Maciej Pisarski said that bilateral trade between the two countries has sharply increased.

“I am happy to report that our bilateral trade with Pakistan has been steadily increasing, with a significant jump from €456.74 million in 2018 to €861 million in 2023.”

The Polish ambassador said that this growth in trade is a reflection of the strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

“We are committed to further strengthening our economic cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration.”

On Poland’s GreenEvo initiative in Pakistan he said that the mission brought together representatives from nine Polish businesses providing innovative green technology solutions, and featured business events in Karachi and Lahore.

The Ambassador hoped that such initiatives will help to further boost the bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

As a success story pertaining to Pak-Poland bilateral economic relations, he said that since 1997 the Polish leading investor, the Polish Oil and Gas Company/Orlen Group, is active in the country with achievements of three tight gas discoveries (Rehman, Rizq, and Rayyan fields) since 2005, which makes it a pioneer in the exploration and production of unconventional gas deposits in Pakistan.

The company has made over USD 450 million in investments thus far, he informed.

“Since it obtained a concession to explore production potential of yet another gas field (Baran), it is possible that its investments will double in the next years.”

He said that POGC/Orlen reinvests its profits in Pakistan, and the success of its operations is predicated to a large degree on timely payments for the delivered gas.

The company itself and the Embassy regularly work with the Government of Pakistan on this issue, the ambassador said.

The ambassador, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the current volume of Pak-Poland bilateral trade, saying it does not yet reflect and strength of the Polish economy and the potential of the Pakistani markets.

Since 1989 Poland’s GDP has increased by an impressive 826.96 percent and since then the country’s GDP per capita PPP has almost tripled, making it the most successful economy in Europe and one of the fastest growing economies among world’s high-income countries, he said.

He condemned Russia and its alleged aggression against Ukrain, adding that involving North Korea in the conflict is dangerous as its troops joins up Europe’s and Asia’s security paradigms in a dangerous and destabilizing fashion.

Turning to the situation in the Middle East, he said that international protection of civilian population and humanitarian law must be respected. He said that despite intense war in Ukrain Polish assistance to Palestine continues.

“We are also committed to supporting international efforts to address the Middle East crisis, particularly in Palestine.  In 2024, Poland contributed $5 million to humanitarian efforts for Palestinians, and we have provided assistance worth over $12.2 million to Palestine in 2023-24. Our aid has focused on supporting vulnerable populations, including refugees, women, and children, and has been channeled through various UN agencies, including UNRWA, WFP, and UNICEF, “ He said.

On Poland’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2025,  he said that his country will focus on building a secure and resilient Europe, with seven key security dimensions, including defense and security, protection of people and borders, and resistance to foreign interference and disinformation.
