Palestinian Ministry reaffirms refugee rights on World Refugee Day

-

Ramallah, 22 June 2024 (TDI): On World Refugee Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights. These include the rights of Palestine refugees as guaranteed under UN General Assembly Resolutions 194(III) and 237.

While acknowledging the rights of Palestinians, the ministry said that the refugees must be allowed to return and receive compensation as specified by applicable UN resolutions, particularly and by international law.

The Ministry further showed determination in collaborating with all relevant parties to advance and uphold the rights of the Palestinian people. The state of Palestine will also keep up the fight to confront the deliberate attempts by the occupying force to ethnically cleanse and annex the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Additionally, it will ensure the immediate return of the 1.9 million Palestinians who were driven out of the Gaza Strip during the ongoing genocide. In addition, the Ministry pledged to safeguard the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Furthermore, it is guaranteed to carry out its UN mandate, which includes providing essential services to Palestine refugees.

Call for International Action

While pledging to continue its fight against Israeli colonial violence on World Refugee Day, the Ministry called forth the international community to play its due role in putting an end to the genocide against Palestine.

Legally, politically, and morally, the global community must make sure that the occupying power stops its atrocities against the Palestinian people. Israel needs to end the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and stop its oppressive rule against the Palestinian people.

Displacement in Gaza

Ever since the start of Israel’s indiscriminate war against Gaza, the Gaza Strip has seen the displacement of about 1.9 million Palestinians. That makes up about more than 80% of the population.

Early in the conflict, Israel forced Palestinians living in northern Gaza to relocate to the southern strip. This led to widespread displacement despite warnings that such a large-scale relocation would have catastrophic humanitarian effects.

But in the months that have passed, Israel has also attacked the southern strip, prompting many to believe that there is no place safe along the strip.
