United Nations: (TDI): Pakistan on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine conflict during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the Minsk Agreement.
Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN Ambassador Usman Jadoon expressed concern over the war’s humanitarian and security impact while regretting the Minsk Deal’s failure to ensure lasting peace.
In his address, Ambassador Jadoon said, “In a week from now, we would mark the third year since the start of conflict in Ukraine. This conflict has continued to have long term consequences for the region as well as for the world peace and security.”
He said that the disproportionate toll of this war on the lives of civilians, infrastructure and material is especially disturbing and appalling.
In 2015, a “Package of Measures for the Implementation of Minsk Agreements” was signed by the relevant stakeholders, aimed at bringing an end to the hostilities in the conflict areas, and preserve peace, he said.
He added that it was in this very chamber that the members of the Security Council unanimously adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2022 ‘endorsing’ the measures of the Minsk agreement, ‘welcoming’, the declarations made by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany in support of the agreement, and called upon all parties to ‘fully implement’ the provisions of the agreement.

In this context, it is regrettable that the Minsk agreement could not achieve the purpose of ensuring sustainable and lasting peace in the region, he said.
Jadoon further said that Pakistan strongly supports dialogue, use of peaceful means and exercise of diplomacy for resolving conflicts.
“On Ukraine conflict, we have been consistent in our calls for restraint, eschewing the objective of settling the issue on the battlefield, respect for the UN charter and its principles, and adoption of a path that leads to a negotiated settlement of the Ukraine conflict.”

We are encouraged to note that the calls for restraint and negotiated settlement of Ukraine conflict are now resonating widely with more countries, besides the Global South, expounding willingness to put their weight and political capital for the cause of peace, and bringing an end to the hostilities which have led to a huge loss of life as well as infrastructure on both sides, he said.
“We welcome this development and fully support and commend all diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing a sustainable and lasting peace to Ukraine and the region.”
