Islamabad, 27 January 2023 (TDI): Carlos Geha, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Head of Office for Pakistan, met with the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, in his office.

The Chairman of the NDMA discussed the contours of the Remodeled National Preparedness and Response System.

He stated that Pakistan is aiming to strengthen the community-based preparedness regime through national-level simulation exercises to mitigate the impact of climate-induced disasters/emergencies in the country.

He went on to say that a digitally updated National Emergencies & Operations Center (NEOC) would be a repository of collaborative data for early warning systems, alert generation, and information-based decision-making for proactive disaster or emergency management in a given situation.

Aside from that, Chairman NDMA also outlined the role of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) in facilitating multi-sectoral research in field disaster management in collaboration with national universities.

Likewise, he outlined the role of NIDM in developing research-driven modules for contingency plans and mock exercises to build national resilience to climatic hazards.
