Bishkek (TDI): Kyrgyzstan’s Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry Bakyt Torobaev attended the 7th meeting of the Joint Kyrgyz-Uzbek Water Management Commission, held in Manas, which was focused on key areas of bilateral collaboration, including the efficient use of shared water resources, water and energy security amid climate change, and future regional development.

Minister Torobaev highlighted that relations between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have evolved into a strategic partnership founded on mutual trust, respect, and support.

“Thanks to the firm political resolve of our presidents, Sadyr Zhaparov and Shavkat Mirziyoyev, we have successfully addressed complex issues, including border matters, which has strengthened confidence and good-neighborly ties between our nations,” the minister stated.

Kyrgyzstan, located upstream of Central Asia’s major rivers, continues to meet its commitments to supply water to downstream countries, playing a crucial role in maintaining food and environmental stability across the region.

“We see water not as a source of conflict, but as a foundation for understanding, friendship, and sustainable growth,” Torobaev emphasized.

To enhance cooperation, the Kyrgyz side proposed several new initiatives, including adopting drip and automated irrigation technologies in border regions, establishing a “Green Belt of Friendship” along the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border to restore forests and prevent desertification, and expanding collaboration between government institutions working in the water and energy sectors.

The meeting also underlined the importance of large-scale regional projects such as the Kambarata-Ata Hydropower Plant No. 1 and the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway, which are expected to boost both countries’ energy capacities and regional connectivity.
