Bishkek (TDI): Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have settled their decades-long border dispute. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov confirmed this during Tuesday’s interview with the official Kabar news agency.
Japarov said the deal was near completion and the demarcation would be completed within two years after official approvals.

The agreement will keep the interest of both countries in view and resolve the 33-year-old dispute over a nearly 1,000-kilometre border.
As part of the agreement, some disputed areas will be split, and a special arrangement will be made to manage interwoven villages, including the relocation of houses in border villages.

For instance, the Tajik side will relocate its citizens, and Kyrgyz citizens will also be moved, while carefully considering the size and land of plots for appropriate compensation.
Both countries have been working closely to resolve the dispute. In December 2024, the two sides completed the identification of disputed sections and the final documentation is now being readied.
