Vientiane, 12 October 2023(TDI): Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko, currently on a diplomatic visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, held a crucial meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saleumxay Kommasith on October 11.
The meeting covered a broad spectrum of topics to bolster the strong relationship between the two nations.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay warmly congratulated Minister Kamikawa on her recent appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He extended a gracious welcome to her on her visit to Laos, expressing deep appreciation for Japan’s unwavering support in advancing the economic and social development of Laos.
Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay acknowledged Japan’s significant support for Laos’ forthcoming role as the host of the ASEAN Chairmanship in the upcoming year.
In response, Minister Kamikawa conveyed her strong commitment to further strengthening the ASEAN-Japan relationship, particularly in light of Laos assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship.
She assured her dedication to full cooperation with Laos to ensure the success of its ASEAN Chairmanship.
Additionally, Minister Kamikawa expressed her eagerness to work closely with Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay in taking the strategic partnership between their two countries to new heights.

In the context of Japan’s support for Laos’ socio-economic development, Minister Kamikawa expressed Japan’s interest in continuing cooperation in developing the legal system, enhancing connectivity, and ensuring financial stability.
She further expressed Japan’s willingness to extend cooperation into new areas, such as addressing climate change and promoting clean energy.
Moreover, Minister Kamikawa stressed Japan’s commitment to contributing to the economic development of Laos through the expansion of Japanese companies’ business ventures in the country.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay expressed his gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support to Laos.
Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay indicated Laos’ dedication to addressing its national fiscal stabilization challenges and conveyed his willingness to cooperate with Japan in attracting more Japanese companies to invest in Laos.
Minister Kamikawa, underlining the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership, expressed her interest in advancing security cooperation and continuing the capacity-building project for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Minister Kamikawa emphasized her commitment to promoting cultural and human exchanges.
Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay expressed Laos’ active intent to encourage people-to-people exchanges in support of the upcoming Laos Tourism Year in 2024.
