Copenhagen, Denmark, January 28, 2025 (TDI): The Government of Denmark has introduced a comprehensive plan to increase the military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic, with a whopping investment of 14.6 Billion Danish Crowns, amid growing regional security concerns.
Background
In January 2024, the US announced plans to expand its military presence in Greenland, including deploying troops and military weapons. A month later, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, clarified that Greenland is not for sale and emphasized the importance of Denmark’s sovereignty over the island.
Official responses
Denmark’s Defence Minister
The Defence Minister of Denmark Troels Lund Poulsen, highlighted the importance of this initiative by the Danish government by stating, “There are serious challenges regarding security and defence in the Arctic and North Atlantic”.
The announcement was made due to the growing security concerns in the region as the US demands control over Greenland – a semi-autonomous Danish territory. Furthermore, the melting ice caps of Greenland further amplified its importance as it unlocks new shipping routes.
The new defence package includes three new ships, the deployment of long-range drones, and upgraded satellites.
Denmark is also working closely with the Faroe Islands and Greenland governments to strengthen deterrence and defence measures against any external security threat, especially the US. A second agreement on these three countries’ deterrence and defence efforts is expected by summer 2025.

Collaborating with European and NATO Allies
Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen emphasized the importance of unity among the European Nations in addressing geopolitical and regional challenges. He stated, “Europe is facing a serious situation, with war on the continent and shifts in the geopolitical reality. In moments like this, unity is crucial.”
Prime Minister Metter Frederiksen will meet with leaders from France, Germany, and NATO this week to discuss possible strategies for broader defence issues and further ensure European collaboration on Greenland.
A Long-Term Commitment
Denmark has already committed 190 billion Danish crowns (equivalent to $26 billion) over the past ten years to strengthening its military capabilities, specifically in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.
With the Arctic’s increasing strategic importance, Denmark is taking all necessary, crucial steps to ensure the region’s security while reinforcing its alliances with European and NATO partners.
