Both sides agreed to make good use of this strategic communication channel.

China considers the Taiwan issue an internal matter and has reiterated from time to time that it would reunite Taiwan with the mainland through peaceful means or by force if necessary.

The talks between both sides took place after the US shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon over the country in February. According to the US Department of Defense, the Chinese balloon was spying on key military sites across the US.

China denied the allegations and stressed the civilian nature of the unmanned airship and called the shooting down of the airship an overreaction.

The event led to the deterioration of trust between the two countries.
