Beijing, 28 April 2023 (TDI): China has warned the US of bloc confrontation in the Korean peninsula and Taiwan.

The statements came from Meo Ning, the spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, in reply to questions on developments related to  President Yoon Suk Yeol’s recent visit to the United States on 26 April in which he discussed North Korea and Taiwan with President Joe Biden.

Both leaders agreed to enhance consultation over the North Korean issue and increase military exercises and training activities.

They also reiterated in a joint statement the “importance of preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry said that the US is putting its geopolitical interests ahead of regional security.

She said that the US is exploiting issues related to the Korean peninsula to stoke bloc confrontation as a result of its “Cold War mentality.”

This jeopardizes the goal of denuclearization, a non-proliferation system, peace and stability, and the strategic interests of other countries.

China calls on all sides to play a constructive role in finding a political resolution to the crisis and avoid deliberately stoking tension in the peninsula.

She also said that Taiwan is an internal matter of China and urged the US and South Korea to see the true nature of the Taiwan question by not hollowing out the One China principle, which would undermine the status quo in the Strait. Both sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China.

The background of the visit by President Yoon to the US and China’s response to it is the increasing tensions between North Korea and South Korea as North Korea is moving ahead with its nuclear and missile program.

Recently, Russia convened a Security Council meeting at the request of some countries to discuss the Korean nuclear issue.

At the meeting, China expressed its support for the “Dual track” solution to the Korean nuclear crisis in which North Korea denuclearizes in exchange for US and South Korea security guarantees.

China has repeatedly accused the US of having a Cold War mentality regarding handling international affairs.
