The ceremony is held at the Independence Monument. The Independence Monument is in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. It was built in 1958 to memorialize the independence of Cambodia in 1953, from France.

Independence Day of Cambodia

The day celebrates Cambodia’s Declaration of Independence from France on 9 November 1953. France took over control of the country in 1853. After colonization of nearly 80 years, King Norodom Sihanouk launched a campaign for the independence of the country, in 1949.

The efforts of Norodom Sihanouk proved to be fruitful and in 1953 France agreed to decolonize Cambodia. He is revered as a hero and the Father of Independence in of the country. He was the king and Prime Minister; known as Samdech Euv.

Every year the country celebrates Independence Day with fervor and enthusiasm by the whole nation. State palaces in the are decorated and there are fireworks in the Chatomuk River which is in front of the royal palace of Phnom Penh. The day represents Khmer’s success over colonization.

Prime Minister of Cambodia

The Prime Minister of Cambodia gave a statement on the occasion saying that, “Independence Day on November 9 is to remind the mission for the country and the people by King Father Norodom Sihanouk who sacrificed his strength and wisdom to struggle for the real independence for his country.”

Prime Minister Hun Sen, National Assembly President, Heng Samrin, Senate President, Say Chhum, and other government officials, attended the ceremony.
