Baku, 6 October 2022 (TDI): The Republic of Azerbaijan repatriated its 15 citizens who were detained in the Amerna camp, in Syria. The camp is in Jarablus city of the Arab republic of Syria.

Azerbaijan has repatriated a total of 393 children and women back to their home state. These include 290 people from the republic of Iraq and 103 from the Syrian Arab republic.

Process of Repatriation

Azerbaijani government’s phased and coordinated actions to bring its citizens back to the state. Firstly, the government determined the identity, citizenship, and location of the citizens of Azerbaijan to repatriate. Then secondly, the government assured the transit of these people through the territory of Turkiye.

The working group on the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from the Arab Republics of Iraq and Syria sent representatives from relevant state institutions to the Republic of Turkey.

They carried out the initial medical and psychological examination of the repatriates. Moreover, they provided the necessary assistance. Furthermore, the group also issued “Certificates of return to the Republic of Azerbaijan” to the citizens through the Azerbaijan embassy.

The aforementioned citizens were returned on the Ankara-Baku flight on October 6, 2022, together with the delegation. The repatriates will be given to their relatives after the relevant processes are finished.

Efforts of Azerbaijan toward repatriation

The Republic of Azerbaijan’s government intends to take all necessary steps for the reintegration and rehabilitation of the relevant individuals. Azerbaijan’s various state organs collaborated and coordinated their efforts to implement repatriation.

It is important to emphasize the Republic of Turkey’s cooperation in making this process a reality.

Azerbaijan continues to take the necessary steps for the gradual repatriation of its other Azerbaijani citizens who are present on the territory of Syria. Repatriation is necessary in order to safeguard the rights and freedoms of the citizens, in accordance with domestic law and international agreements.
