Zalmay Khalilzad talks about Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan

-

Kabul, 4 August 2021 (TDI): Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation, gave an interview to VOA and Radio Azadi on 2 August 2021. The envoy discussed the immediate need for settlement between the conflicting parties in Afghanistan and urged to prevent the extension of the war in the region.

Zalmay stressed that if the Afghan Taliban completely take over the country, they will form a pariah state facing diplomatic and political isolation from the International Community. He reiterated America’s position that the USA will stay committed to encouraging resolution between the Afghan authorities and the Afghan Taliban. He noted that the Afghan War is depriving Pakistan and Central Asian states of effective communication. Also, he stated that Pakistan has a special role in encouraging peace and security in Afghanistan, and how Pakistan plays this role will be judged internationally.
