Xi’s telephonic contact with Putin

Beijing/Moscow, 25 August 2021 (TDI): The Chinese President Xi Jinping had telephonic contact with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, on Wednesday. During the meeting, both sides had a detailed conversation over the recent Afghan situation, bilateral relations, and vaccine cooperation between the two states.

Xi, while talking about the Afghan issue mentioned that China is ready to stand with Russia and the international community to ensure a peaceful environment in Afghanistan. Xi, during the conversation also called out for joint efforts by two nations to promote all authorities in Afghanistan to form domestic and international policies that will ensure an open, inclusive, terrorist free and neighbor-friendly Afghanistan.

While talking about the bilateral ties, Xi mentioned that this year, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation has proved to be a new start to a strategic partnership between the two and also underlined that the two nations should explore for new areas of cooperation to enhance the relations.

In regards to the 20th anniversary of SCO, Xi asked Putin to together use this opportunity to work with the member states for the interests and development of regional states, as well as to increase mutual support among the SCO states.

Lastly, Xi also envisioned more collaboration with Russia on vaccines, stating that China is willing to cooperate with Russia to strengthen cooperation on developing and producing vaccines so that a global supply of vaccines can be ensured.

Putin for his part recognized the stance of China on all the issues and mentioned that Russia will closely work with China on the Afghan issue. The two sides agreed to work closely on bilateral and international matters in the future.
