Trudeau virtually met G7 leaders

Papineau, 25 August 2021 (TDI): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau participated in a virtual meeting with other leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), on Tuesday. The Secretaries-General of the United Nations (UN) and NATO also participated in this meeting. They discussed the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. The leaders expressed their worries for the said country. Moreover, they called for calm and moderation in order to protect vulnerable Afghan and foreign citizens. Avoiding a humanitarian disaster is also their priorty. Leaders of G7 advocated for adherence to international human rights legislation responsibilities in all situations.

In a statement released by the G7 Leaders, they reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the Afghan people. They will cooperate with the UN in organizing the urgent international humanitarian response in the area, including unrestricted humanitarian access in Afghanistan, they added.

They reiterated their determination to work together with their allies and other regional nations. By doing so, they intend to bring the international community together to solve the major issues confronting Afghanistan, through the UN, the G20, and other venues. They reiterated that the Taliban will be held accountable for their conduct in the areas of counter-terrorism, human rights, particularly for women, girls, and minorities, and seeking an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan.

The G7, an intergovernmental political forum, consists of leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
