Washington, 16 October 2021 (TDI): The US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with the EU High Representative for Security policy and Foreign Affairs Josep Borell Fontelles. The High Representative Fontelles is also Vice President of the EU Commission in Washington.
During the meeting, Secretary Blinken highlighted the importance of enduring friendship between the US and EU. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitments towards working with the EU in combatting mutual challenges.
Both the officials also deliberated over the current situation in Afghanistan. They also agreed to launch a bilateral High-Level Dialogue on Russia and China, respectively. Secretary Blinken while welcoming the Indo-Pacific Strategy of the EU also agreed to launch high-level consultations between the US and EU later in this year.
Additionally, both the officials also highlighted their support for democratic government in Venezuela and called for the restoration of the democratic order in the country.

Secretary Blinken also expressed his gratitude to the EU High Representative for the other constructive role European External Action Services played in arranging the first meeting between the US and EU for trade and technology.
Other vital issues of discussion included high energy prices and their impact on economic recovery. Both officials agreed to hold their bilateral ministerial meetings early next year. Secretary Blinken reiterated USA’s continued support for the European defense and NATO.
