The Chairman of House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), Congressman Gregory Meeks and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia and Non-Proliferation, Congressman Ami Bera called on Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad on 22nd November, 2021.

Islamabad, 22 November 2021 (TDI): Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi held talks with visiting US House of Representative Congressmen, Chairman of House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), Gregory Meeks, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia and Non-Proliferation.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

The officials led bilateral talks on a number of shared interests and were given a warm welcome by the Prime Minister.

The Premier addressed the developing humanitarian emergency in Afghanistan and emphasized that there is a crucial need to assist the ailing country financially so as to avert any situation of crisis be it economic or in its aftermath a humanitarian one. The Afghan economy is already struggling to maintain monetary liquidity and banking channels.

The Prime Minister Khan hoped for greater engagement and high-level exchanges like those on Parliamentary levels in the future and stressed the need for enhancing engagement which would result in strengthening diplomatic relations, trade ties, and cooperation in areas of health, security, and the fight against climate change.

Meeting with the Foreign Minister

The Congressmen also called upon the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Both the parties emphasized fostering relations of trade and investments. Further, the Foreign Minister called attention to the need of increasing and strengthening parliamentary relations.

He also emphasized that for the promotion of peace, stability, and security, and development in the region unhindered constructive engagement must continue between Pakistan and the USA.

Talking of regional peace and security the Minister also shed light on the issue of Afghanistan and briefed the Congressmen of Pakistan’s increasing and consistent efforts on securing peace and development in Afghanistan. Regarding the current situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s continuous engagement, the Minister briefed them Pakistan’s evacuation efforts, humanitarian assistance, and the recently held Troika Plus meeting.
